Birkenstock Sandals for Men and Women
The Birkenstock name dates back to 1774 in Germany and is known for the contoured footbed placed in each shoe. In Germany, this top name shoe is generally worn as a house or bedroom shoe.
In the United States, individuals wear them for all different types of daily events. An American Birkenstock company was founded around 1967 by Margot Fraser who discovered these sandals while vacationing in Germany. The shoes gave her tremendous relief to a foot condition she had and she wanted to manufacture the same type of shoes in the Americas.
As this brand has become popular, this line of sandals has branched out into a strappy sandal and clogs. These shoes are made out of cork and leather (occasionally shiny patent leather for new styles) and can be purchased in colors like green, red, purple and blue.
One of the reasons Birkenstock rose to fame in the 1970s was the all natural products used in making their sandals. The footbed is made out of cork, latex and jute which are all renewable, natural products that can be recycled easily. The cork used in the sole is left over from companies that make corks for wine bottles. Each sandal is handmade and any materials left over in the factory are reused or recycled.
